Collection development at RC is a process of selecting, acquiring, and providing access to traditional and electronic resources supporting the information and scholarly needs of students and faculty. Communication between the Centre and faculty to identify collection needs, formulation of RC policies, budget development and collection assessment are fundamental to the collection development process.

The primary goal of the Centre is to acquire and develop the vast array of information resources needed to support the School’s teaching and research. The following criteria apply to all materials.

General Criteria:

  • Patrons’ needs and demands
  • Scope and content – comprehensiveness and depth of coverage
  • Scholarly worth
  • Currency and timeliness
  • Relevance to existing collection
  • Relative price – purchase price as well as on-going expenses relating to ordering, cataloguing, and preserving
  • Availability of materials at the PolyU Main Library
  • Physical quality, special features
  • Language and country of origin

Weeding/Stock Editing

RC develops and maintains collections which meet the users’ needs for current and retrospective information. Regular and systematic weeding is conducted by the RC’s staff to identify materials no longer useful is essential to maintain the high quality and integrity of the collection. When items become worn out/damaged beyond use, or the information contained is outdated, or when their reference or research value is lost, they should be withdrawn to ensure the vitality and usefulness of the collections, and to make room for new and updated materials. Withdrawn items will be dispatched to external institutions who wish to receive them.
